With the rising of the cognitive linguistics, the role of metaphor has acquired a renewed recognition. In the traditional rhetoric, metaphor is only a figure of speech;while in the newly rising cognitive linguistics, metaphor occupies a central position, and it is regarded as an important cognitive tool to help us understand the world better and easier.Metaphor is so pervasive in the expression of abstract emotion, for example, love, that it plays an essential and indispensable role in our understanding and communicating with other people.Through investigating a large number of love metaphors in both English and Chinese, the author finds that English and Chinese share many general conceptual metaphors due to cognitive universals as well as linguistic universals since the basic bodily and life experience are common among all human beings. However, some differences also exist because of cultural relativity.
