Linguistics is one of the most difficult content courses to English Majors, due to its emphasis on thecompleteness of the highly specialized linguistic theories. Therefore, the necessity and importance of it in themajor studies were once questioned. However, after 30 years' construction, judged from the results of surveycovering about 10 universities and colleges, its role in subject system has been widely accepted; the design of itstextbook can stress the features of the linguistics, meet students' learning level and catch up with the new trend; itsteaching outstands the nature of language and linguistics, theoretical application, adoption of students' learningneed of ETM-8, postgraduate entrance examination as well as other courses in order to adjust their incorrectconcept of the course, deepen the contents of the instruction, release the pressure of students' fear in the courselearning and stimulate their learning interest.
