This essay aims to do an empirical research on the sentence-building chunks used by Chinese non-English major college students. The comparison of the frequency and the use of some chunks, which are from composition corpora of Chinese non-English major college students and British college students, indicates a significant difference in the usage of sentence-building chunks. The statistics reveal that the output by Chinese college students is less characterized by standard written language and with oralness tendency.Besides the problem of weak register awareness, there also exists the problem of interlingual transfer resulting in improper collocation. This study also analyzes the pedagogy implication.
