The Tale of Genji is the greatest classical literature in Japan just as A Dream of Red Mansions in China. There are the images of the soul in both of the two works. This essay attempts to explore and compare the images of soul from A Dream of Red Mansions and The Tale of Genji. According to this study, we conclude that Buddhism has an important impact on shaping of the image of soul both in China and Japan. Buddhism in China is under the influence of Confucianism whereas in Japan it is under the influence of Shinto, which is why there are differences between images of soul in the two works.
