Abstract:Since various degrees of losses will result in the linguistic and cultural defaults in the process of translation, it is of great necessity to adopt some compensation devices to avoid the semantic ambiguity. The texts of Chinese idioms and their stories manifest great features of Chinese culture, in which compensation devices are especially in need. Based on the compensation theories of Peter Newmark and Xia Tingde, this paper analyses the compensation devices applied in the translation of Chinese Idioms and Their Stories Translated into English from the perspectives of linguistics, culture and aesthetics.
