Abstract:Dickens was another great and famous English writer all over the world after Shakespeare in 19th Century. One of his famous long novels is A Tale of Two Cities. The background of this novel is set in the French Revolution in the 18th Century. In the novel, through criticizing the brutality of feudal aristocracy and exposing the evil of the human nature, Dickens expressed his sympathy for the people in the bottom strata and hatred for the violent revolution. Moreover, he also showed the bourgeois humanitarian spirit of benevolence. This paper will first briefly describe the humanitarian spirit in the novel A Tale of Two Cities, and then analyze the humanitarian spirit embodied in the main characters of the novel, and lastly reflect on the significance of the times and society.
