The Yuefu poems of the Southern Song Dynasty inherit the tradition of reflecting the reality and criticizing the current problems in the new Yuefu style, but the Yuefu poems of the Song Dynasty gradually separate from the music and showed a tendency of poetics. Fan Chengda’s Yuefu poems expose the exploitation of the rulers and empathize the hardship of the people’s livelihood. On the one hand, his poems inherit the spirit of Yuefu poems. On the other hand, his poems bring new characteristics to Yuefu poetry. Truthfully recording customs and folk activities is a new feature of Fan Chengda’s Yuefu poems. Fan Chengda creates the folk-style Yuefu poem such as the Bamboo Branch Song of Kui Zhou, which realized the perfect fusion of folk content and folk genre, providing us with multiple perspectives and preserving precious materials for in-depth study of the rural life in the south region of Yangtze River. Fan Chengda’s Yuefu poems influenced later poets’ creation and improved the depth and breadth of the poems reflecting reality.
